In a glass grimmly7/6/2023 And I was very happy when things worked out for a happy ending. I held my breath when they found themselves in some very tight and scary parts. I cheered for them when they accomplished incredible obstacles. My heart was broken for what happened to these three friends. This kids wormed their way into my heart and I felt deeply for them. I challenge you to read this without talking out loud or even shouting or moaning on some parts. His narration is perfect and really adds to this book. I strongly recommend getting the audiobook narrated by Johnnie Heller. I'd say that any reader under twelve should be under parental supervision, most definitely. You might want to read it first and then let your child read it. I mean, I admit I probably read stuff like that when I was twelve, but I would caution a parent to be careful with this book. There are a couple of parts of this book that are in no way kid friendly. I was skeptical to see what he could do with Jack and Jill, but he more than pleasantly surprised me. Once again, Adam Gidwitz has knocked my socks off.

A psalm for the wild built genre7/6/2023 In a way, not a lot happens, but all the characters are changed by their interactions with one another. As the title suggests, it is much more about the journey than the destination. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, the first book in the series, details the adventures of the crew of the ship Wayfarer. Instead, they rely on relationships to succeed, picking each other up and dusting themselves down in the face of adversity. But unlike the golden age stories, Chambers’s characters live complex lives and know that not all problems can be tackled with the wave of a plot-solving gizmo. Increasingly, authors are writing “hopepunk” stories (a slightly cringeworthy term inspired by cyberpunk) that weaponise optimism, according to one Vox journalist.Īt the forefront of this subgenre is Becky Chambers, award-winning author of the Wayfarers series. Whether it is characters dealing with alien invasions, technology gone wrong or the ravages of climate change, most modern books in the genre are dour affairs, in stark contrast to the “golden age” sci-fi of the 1940s and 50s, when unrealistic techno-utopianism ruled.īut it isn’t all bad. I READ a lot of sci-fi and, my, the future can be grim at times.

Happy hour marlowe7/6/2023 After spending time in London and New York, she now resides in Toronto. Marlowe Granados is a writer and filmmaker. Happy Hour is a novel about getting by and having fun in a system that wants you to do neither. Through it all, Isa's bold, beguiling voice captures the precise thrill of cultivating a life of glamour and intrigue as she juggles paying her dues with skipping out on the bill. She co-hosts The Mean Reds, a podcast dedicated to women-led films. After spending time in New York and London, Granados currently resides in Toronto. Resources run ever tighter and the strain tests their friendship as they try to convert social capital into something more lasting than precarious gigs as au pairs, nightclub hostesses, paid audience members, and aspiring foot fetish models. She is the author of Happy Hour, a novel the New York Times called confident, charismatic and alive to the pleasure of observation. By night, they weave between Brooklyn, the Upper East Side, and the Hamptons among a rotating cast of celebrities, artists, Internet entrepreneurs, stuffy intellectuals, and bad-mannered grifters. They have little money, but that's hardly going to stop them.īy day, the girls sell clothes on a market stall, pinching pennies for their Bed-Stuy sublet and bodega lunches. She arrives in New York with her newly blond best friend looking for adventure. Isa Epley, all of twenty-one years old, is already wise enough to understand that the purpose of life is the pursuit of pleasure. With the verve and bite of Ottessa Moshfegh and the barbed charm of Nancy Mitford, Marlowe Granados's stunning debut brilliantly captures a summer of striving in New York City.

Bulgakov dog7/6/2023 Garcia Marquez's landmark work of magical realism was predated by nearly three decades by Bulgakov's brilliant masterpiece of a novel. And it was not invented by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as wonderful as his One Hundred Years of Solitude is. It is at the heart of the present zeitgeist. The deadpan mix of the fantastic and the realistic was at the heart of the Vietnamese mythos. One could call it, in terms that would soon thereafter gain wide currency, "magical realism". Bulgakov taught me to hear something in those stories that I had not yet clearly heard. Later each night, as was my custom, I would wander out into the steamy back alleys of the city, where no one ever seemed to sleep, and crouch in doorways with the people and listen to the stories of their culture and their ancestors and their ongoing lives. The tropical air was heavy and full of the smells of cordite and motorcycle exhaust and rotting fish and wood-fire stoves, and the horizon flared ambiguously, perhaps from heat lightning, perhaps from bombs. I first read Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita on a balcony of the Hotel Metropole in Saigon on three summer evenings in 1971.

Nightingale and the bear7/4/2023 Katherine Arden brings medieval Northern Rus’ alive in this, the first book in her Winternight trilogy. The Bear and the Nightingale is a coming of age tale with a difference and a gorgeous retelling of a Russian fairytale. She alone can see the house spirits that guard her home, and sense the growing forces of dark magic in the woods. In a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year, an elderly servant tells stories of sorcery, folklore and the Winter King to the children of the family, tales of old magic frowned upon by the church.īut for the young, wild Vasya these are far more than just stories. The Bear and the Nightingale had been on my TBR shelf for far too long but with the final book in the Winternight Trilogy out last month, I decided to spend some of my winter nights reading all three books. |
